Fremantle are hungry to finish the season on a high as they look to build momentum for the 2021 season, according to ruckman Sean Darcy.
With finals only a small mathematical chance, even if Freo win their final two games against North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs, Darcy said the playing group would gain a lot from building a winning habit.
It’s something Darcy hopes Fremantle have already started after a convincing team performance in their 14-point win against Melbourne on Monday at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns.
“It’s really important, especially for a young team going into pre-season next year,” Darcy said.
“You see most teams, if they have a good end to the season they start well the next year. That’s really important for us.”
Next up for Freo are the Kangaroos at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.
“(Against North Melbourne) we’ve just got to bring that effort. We’ve got to have 22 players playing consistent football, playing their roles,” Darcy said.
“We need to guard the corridor and they’re pretty deadly in the centre bounce so our midfielders will need to be on top of their game.”
While Fremantle are set to miss finals, their cohesiveness under new senior coach Justin Longmuir has seen calls from some commentators, including Fox Footy’s Jonathon Brown, for Longmuir to be considered for coach of the year.
Darcy understood the praise for Longmuir but added it was on the players to get more results on the board.
“He’s been unbelievable. He comes in and he’s really instilled confidence in every player to bring their strengths and play to their strengths,” Darcy said.
“He was really happy with the win (against Melbourne) but there’s always things to improve on. He’s never satisfied and he just wants us to get better every day.
“He’s done a really good job with us and I’m sure, if we start winning and keep winning, why not.”
