Senior coach Justin Longmuir says Fremantle are preparing for a GWS outfit at their best on Saturday at Optus Stadium.

While Fremantle has enjoyed a run of form in the past month, winning three of their past four games, GWS is winless in their two games so far in the WA hub.

Longmuir said last year’s grand finalists showed glimpses of their best against West Coast in round 13, including kicking the final four goals of their 12-point loss.

“I feel we’re going about our business in the right way at the moment and getting some good results,” Longmuir told Seven News.

“We’ll have to butter up again this week and play a GWS side that have, probably, found a little bit of form in the second half against West Coast. We’ll have our challenges this week.”

OPPOSITION: Former Docker among potential returns

Longmuir wasn’t surprised to hear defender Luke Ryan and forward Matt Taberner being touted as potential All Australians after strong seasons to date.

Taberner has kicked 23 goals in 2020 and is the only player to have kicked a major in every possible round this year.

Ryan is having a career-best season and is coming off winning the Goodes-O’Loughlin medal as the best on ground in Freo’s 31-point win against Sydney in round 13.

“Both (Taberner and Ryan) are playing really consistent high-end footy,” Longmuir said.

“They’re putting the work in during the week and getting the results on the weekend.

“I think they’re around the mark (for All Australian), they’ve both been consistently playing really good footy and when you do that, you put yourself in those conversations.

“Hopefully, it goes their way at the end of the year.”

Longmuir was keen to see David Mundy sign on for at least one more season as the 35-year-old continues to play at his best.

Playing his 327th career game against Sydney, Mundy placed second behind Ryan in the voting for the Goodes-O’Loughlin medal with 22 disposals, nine contested possessions and a goal.

“He’s playing really good footy, he’s performing at a high level, but off the field he’s leading our young players and passing a lot of his experience on,” Longmuir said.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way he’s going and we’re in constant talks with David about where he sits and where the club sits next year.

“I would (like Mundy to play on), absolutely. He gives a lot to us on the field and a lot to us off the field as well. We’ll keep working through that situation.”

While Longmuir has been reluctant to tinker with Fremantle’s forward structure, he expects to see Jesse Hogan make his return to AFL level as Freo enter a condensed fixture for the coming rounds.

“We’re just looking for him to return to some form, he got injured and came back at a time where the team was performing really well,” Longmuir said.

“We’ve had some wet weather footy in the past couple of weeks which probably hasn’t allowed us to play three talls in our forward line.

“He just needs to get back and work on his craft and his opportunity will come with the condensed fixture coming up.”
