Fremantle have shown an ability to compete against the AFL’s strongest teams and senior coach Justin Longmuir says the results will come when they perform more consistently at a higher level.
Geelong will be the sixth team from the current top eight that Fremantle have faced in the opening eight rounds and Longmuir believes the AFL’s best teams have been able to punish Freo’s inconsistency.
In a 30-point loss in the RAC Derby, Freo conceded three quick goals in the middle of the second term before going scoreless in the third.
“We reviewed it today and we got aspects of our game right but weren’t consistent enough across the four quarters,” Longmuir told Seven News on Tuesday night.
“That’s been our issue this year. There’s some execution, some contests, some method that let us down.
“We need to improve in a lot of different areas but we feel like when we get our game going, we’re able to compete against any side. We’re after some consistency.
“(Geelong are) a formidable team that’s played a lot of footy together. We need to keep building and keep improving on what we’re playing at the moment and start really seeing some of that consistency come through.
“We feel like once we play our footy we can challenge any team, so it will be a great challenge for us on Monday night.”
The AFL released the fixture between rounds nine and 12 on Tuesday with Freo securing a further three consecutive games at Optus Stadium.
Longmuir said Freo were prepared to head back east if needed later in the season.
“Like I’ve said all year, we’re prepared for anything this season throws up,” Longmuir said.
“We always understood that we were going to get a run of home games and we’re in that at the moment and we always understood that we would have to go away again at some stage to finish the season.
“What that looks like, we’ll wait and see but we’re expecting we’ll have to travel again.”
