Alex Silvagni is this week’s WAFL player of the round, after being one of the best on ground in Claremont’s win over Subiaco.
And history could repeat itself this week if Silvagni is selected to take Luke McPharlin’s spot in Fremantle’s defence for Saturday night’s Elimination Final against Geelong at the MCG.
In 2010, after missing the last six games of the home and away season, Silvagni was called up to play the Elimination Final against Hawthorn.
This season the 24-year-old has missed the last nine games of the season, his last match being against Collingwood at the MCG in round 14.
Senior development and assistant coach Simon Lloyd said if Silvagni was selected he would bring a strong physical presence to the game and some finals experience.
“He constantly shows strong physicality around the contest. He has been playing with real intent and effort,” Lloyd said.
“We have seen consistently in his WAFL footy that he is very good under the high ball.
“He’s played finals at both WAFL and AFL, he’s played in some big games and he’s play at the MCG against Collingwood this year.
Lloyd said that Silvagni’s football had improved over the year and he had learnt to play to Lyon’s game style.
Llyod shared his notes on all Fremantle players in the WAFL last weekend.
Alex Silvagni (C) 22 disposals (11 kicks, 11 handballs) 8 marks, 4 tackles
Alex played the majority of the game on Callum Sinclair at center halfback. He was quick cutting off the lead and was strong in the air. His contested marking was a feature along with his ability to impact as the third man in. He provided a lot of good run out of defence. Alex was one of Claremont’s better players in a dominant win.
Antoni Grover (S) 25 disposals (16 kicks, 9 handballs) 8 marks
Antoni played on Tom Lee and Ian Richardson. He was aggressive with his body-work and had control of his opponents in the one on one contest. He cleaned the footy up well under pressure and provided some really good run and rebound out of defence.
