Freo adds size in Pre-Season, Rookie Draft
Brad Lloyd discusses Freo's Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts
The club selected 201cm South Australian ruckman Jack Hannath with pick 8 in the Pre-Season Draft, and re-listed Tasmanian Jesse Crichton with pick 14.
In the Rookie Draft, 197cm Victorian Matt Taberner was taken with pick 11, while WAFL Colts leading goal kicker Alex Howson, who stands 195cm, was chosen with pick 26.
Both have been training with Freo during the pre-season.
NSW scholarship recruit Craig Moller was officially added to the rookie list with selection 51.
Freo general manager of player management Brad Lloyd said the club was pleased to add the promising talls to its existing big man stocks.
“We’ve added height to the list via the National, Pre-Season and Rookie Draft,” he said.
“Bringing in Tanner Smith through the National Draft was a good start, and then we took Jack Hannath, who is a ruckman, and two tall forwards in Matt Taberner and Alex Howson.
“So there is some good size and athleticism there.”
Hannath, 21, had been training in Darwin with Melbourne in the hope of being selected in the Rookie Draft.
Lloyd said the club has had its eye on the Central Districts player for a couple of years now.
“Jack has come through the ranks and has become a really good elite player this year in the SANFL,” he said.
“He is a good size ruckman who will fit our list really well with Aaron Sandilands, Zac Clarke, Jon Griffin and Craig Moller.”
Lloyd described Taberner, who has been playing for the Murray Bushrangers, as a tall forward with a massive running capacity.
“He came down here for a week of pre-season training and his endurance was up with our top runners,” Lloyd said.
“He is a nice left-footer and we’ll develop him as he learns the game.”
Lloyd said Howson, who kicked 57 goals at colts level for East Fremantle, was an athletic forward with good speed.
“He’ll lead up forward and can use his speed running back toward goal.
“He is 195cm, so it’s good to see the forward line structure up with size.”
Crichton was delisted at the end of this season but has been given another chance at the top level.
“Jesse has been training really hard and he deserves to stay on the list and continue his career at the club,” Lloyd said.
“We are excited to have him on the list.”
