Five Talking Points from round 10
From Hayden Crozier and Jesse Crichton to Matt de Boer and Chris Mayne - here's five topics of discussion to arise from Saturday's game
Debutant Hayden Crozier had to wait until the third quarter to get his first taste of playing AFL. The youngster made an instant impact with an intercept mark on the wing and a tackle won him a free kick for holding-the-ball. Crozier gave the Patersons Stadium crowd some real energy and his efforts were labelled as “fantastic” by coach Ross Lyon.

Crichton lifts
Jesse Crichton has always had ability, but to this point of his career, he’s struggled to make an impact at AFL level. On Saturday, after a quiet first half, the 20-year-old Tasmanian lifted a couple of gears and began to hit the contests with intent and take the game on. That would have pleased his coaching staff, who have shown faith in his ability. Now he’s got to find consistency and build on what he showed against the Crows.
Matty in the midfield
Ross Lyon says Matt de Boer has done his apprenticeship in the forward line and could be set for a regular midfield berth. The 22-year-old hard nut did his prospects of permanently playing on the ball no harm on Saturday with a 25 disposal, seven tackle effort.
Crash, bang Mayney
On more than one occasion on Saturday, Chris Mayne earned his teammates a shot a goal with his relentless attack on the footy. No effort was more significant than when he crashed a pack in the final quarter which ended up with Matthew Pavlich kicking the go-ahead goal. Mayne got up very sore, but he was immediately embraced by his captain, who would have told him who that goal also belonged to.

Video controversy over Hill shot
Stephen Hill was denied a booming 60m goal by the AFL’s video review system. The goal umpire looked set to award the six points, but the field umpire wanted to be sure the ball wasn’t touched on its way over the line. The replay was inconclusive but the decision went against the Freo midfielder when the shot was deemed a behind.
