A debut game at Optus Stadium is the primary goal for Griffin Logue in 2019 but the young defender said he is taking his return from a foot injury one step at a time.
Logue returned for pre-season training on Monday ready to take on the intense program to build his fitness for round one.
The 20-year-old said he’s only just recovered from missing the 2018 season with an ankle and foot injury and on Wednesday, he passed the first test by placing fourth in the 2km time trial between the club’s first to fourth year players.
“Two weeks into the off-season I was on the full workload,” Logue said.
“Now I’m in the full program and, hopefully, I’ll stay in that. There are no restrictions so far.”
Logue explained the nature of the injury that curtailed his 2018 season.
“I had a congenital disorder with my foot where there was a bit of a spare bone rubbing on my tendon,” Logue said.
“It was very abnormal and hard to diagnose. We had to remove the bone and it was kind of a ‘play it by ear’ situation.
“Once we removed it, it was all good. Unfortunately, once I got back I rolled my ankle and did a bit of damage there but I’m all sweet now and it will be smooth sailing.”
Logue isn’t setting any goals as he makes his return but a first game at Optus Stadium looms as an exciting prospect for the defender.
“I’ll be pretty happy to keep my mind open as to what I can get through and achieve this year,” Logue said.
“I just want to get out on the track, that’s been my first goal and I’ll take everything from there.
“I think I’ve had one session on Optus Stadium and that was just a training session so I haven’t actually played a game there.
“It’s definitely still a bit novelty for me, going out there and it’s such a fantastic stadium for Perth and especially for us to play there.
“We have four Saturday night games this year, it’s really exciting and it will be great to be a part of that.”
