Fremantle trailed Collingwood by as much as 40 points early in the second quarter. The deficit was as little as three goals in the third term. This highlighted the best and worst of Freo’s performance against the Magpies in round 14. The start was not good enough. Ten minutesinto the second quarter, Collingwood had accumulated 41 possessions in their forward half. Fremantle had a paltry one. Chris Mayne took Freo’s first mark inside 50 and kicked his side’s opening goal at the 16-minute mark of the second term. Freo began to reel the margin in and, powered by Matthew Pavlich’s five goals and Michael Barlow’s midfield work, got back into the contest. But the bird, Magpies in this case, had well and truly flown. The ever-elusive four-quarter effort continued to evade Ross Lyon’s side.

Freo Fact: Michael Barlow’s 37 disposals was a career high and the most he’s had in a game since gaining 34 touches in round 8, 2010, also against Collingwood.

Ross Lyon: “Early in the third quarter, when they were walking into some easy goals and we made some chase downs from behind, I think if you had have been a Dockers’ member or fan watching that you’d think, ‘this team hasn’t given up’.”

The selection table

Fremantle – Stephen Hill could be the big inclusion, but Nat Fyfe, Matthew Pavlich and Aaron Sandilands are not available. Zac Clarke could berushed back because there are no WAFL fixtures this week. Viv Michie has been in terrific form at WAFL level for a number of weeks now.

Collingwood – Collingwood could be tempted to include courageous midfielder Luke Ball and the mercurial Alan Didak. Both are returning from long injury layoffs. Ball starred in the VFL on the weekend, while Didak also performed well. Their experience and hardness could be required against Freo’s contested brand. Star midfielder Dayne Beams will miss through injury, as will captain Nick Maxwell. Alan Toovey is gone for the season. Speedy Irishman Caolan Mooney was superb in the VFLwith five goals and could be recalled given Patersons Stadium suits quick players.

X Factors

Fremantle – Jon Griffin: In the absence of Matthew Pavlich and Kepler Bradley up forward, Freo needed a tall to stand up and kick goals. Jon Griffin booted three against Gold Coast when resting in attack. He could really stretch the Collingwood defence again on Saturday night.

Collingwood – Andrew Krakouer: The superbly talented forward played his first game of the season last week and was quiet. At his best he can be a real x-factor. He played one of the greatest WAFL games ever on Patersons Stadium in Swan Districts’ premiership a few years ago and those happy surroundings could help him find form.

Key Match-ups

Ryan Crowley v Scott Pendlebury: Dane Swan might be the Brownlow Medallist in the Magpies’ fold, but it’s Pendlebury’s hands that Freo will not want to see the football anywhere near. The star on-baller is an early front-runner in Brownlow discussions this season and can expect to say hello to Crowley at the first bounce.

Luke McPharlin v Travis Cloke: The Collingwood forward is back to his best and must be contained. Luke McPharlin is the man for the job but he will need a lot of help up the field from Freo’s forwards and midfielders, because if Cloke sees un-pressured ball, it won’t matter who the defender is playing on him.

Jon Griffin v Darren Jolly: Griffin could be crucial up forward and in the ruck, where Collingwood ranks last in the AFL for hitouts this season.

Dream Team

Fremantle: Michael Barlow loves playing the Pies, who usually don’t place any hard tags on opposition midfielders. He’s averaged 117 in his three games against Collingwood, including a 37-disposal effort in round 14 last year.

Collingwood: Dane Swan has a phenomenal average of 146.5 points per game over his past four against Freo.

Freo will be happy if: The supply to Travis Cloke is pressured enough to allow Freo’s defence to dictate terms.

Collingwood will be happy if: Scott Pendlebury continues in the richvein of form he’s currently in.
