Alex Silvagni has trained throughout the pre-season to develop his ability to play on small forwards as well as talls, and on Saturday in round 4 of WAFL action, he showed just how versatile he is becoming.

Silvagni was Fremantle’s WAFL player of the week in Claremont’s big win over East Perth, pulling down 14 marks among 22 disposals.

Freo assistant and senior development coach Simon Lloyd said the club was pleased with what they saw from Silvagni.

“Throughout the game he switched between playing as a key defender and also as a running back on small forwards,” Lloyd said.

“That’s something that Alex has developed over the past year.”

Silvagni played both finals for Freo at AFL level in 2012, including a brilliant performance to hold Geelong forward James Podsiadly goalless in the Elimination Final victory at the MCG.

Lloyd said Silvagni would continue to build his game in regards to positioning and ball-use.

“The thing about Alex is that he has an excellent work rate and he is becoming stronger, too, so that he can play on the bigger types of players as well,” he said.

“He is building his body up and he has had his first full pre-season in a very long time, which stands him in good stead for the season.”

Lloyd shared his notes from all Fremantle players who played in the WAFL on the weekend.

Alex Silvagni (C) 22 disposals (18 kicks, 4 handballs) 14 marks, 4 tackles

Alex’s positioning has really improved and he was able to release his opponent into congestion. He was also able to roll off and take some great marks and demonstrate some aggressive spoils. He copped a really big hit in the third quarter, but as we have seen consistently with Alex, he showed great resilience to keep playing.

Josh Mellington  (WP) 11 disposals (7 kicks, 4 handballs) 1 goal

Josh ground his way into the game in the 2nd quarter and, particularly late in the game, we were happy with his pressure off the back of stoppages where he managed to stop a South Fremantle handball chain and cut through.  He worked hard to pressure deep in defence. It wasn’t a high statistical game for Josh, but he worked hard defensively when West Perth were under pressure.

Haiden Schloithe (SF) 22 disposals (6 kicks, 16 handballs) 1 goal

Haiden started off as the defensive mid on West Perth’s Mark Hutchings but South Fremantle went away from the tag and Haiden had an impact, getting first hands on the ball at stoppages. He kicked a goal and used the ball very well when switching play.

Max Duffy (EF) 15 disposals (11 kicks, 4 handballs) 3 goals

It was a real positive game for Max in that he worked his way into the game. He had a more productive second half through his work rate and his impact on the contest through effort. He kicked 3.3, which could have easily been six goals. He worked harder defensively to put pressure on the opposition and lock it in the forward 50.

Josh Simpson (EF) 15 disposals (9 kicks, 6 handballs) 4 goals

Josh showed his ability to attack weekend. He created several scoring opportunities through handballs and blocking and was extremely dangerous and creative across the forward 50. It was a positive game for Josh.

Alex Howson (EF) Reserves 13 disposals (9 kicks, 4 handballs) 4 marks

Alex found the ball better than he has in the past few weeks and he usedit well on inside 50m entries on several occasions.  We were pleasedthat he dropped into space as the plus-one in the defensive 50 justprior to three-quarter-time. Alex took a good cut-off chest mark, whichis what we want to see.

Lachie Neale (SD) 13 disposals (8 kicks, 5 handballs)

Lachie only played the first half of the game due to a cork. He played inside mid and a short spell forward. We were pleased with his defensive run and offensive spread. He won a number of ground balls and his ability to recognise his opposition in transition was very good. Overall, it was a pleasing half-game from Lachie.
