Rookie Matt Taberner has impressed Freo's coaching staff since making his Peel league debut back in round six.

Taberner performed well again on the weekend, gathering 25 disposals and kicking three goals.

Freo assistant and senior development coach Simon Lloyd said Taberner was a real "workhorse".

"He has a great running ability and a lot of his run equates to what you would expect at AFL level," Lloyd said.

"He has a real appetite for hard work."

Lloyd said Taberner's professionalism had also impressed.

"He’s shown real professionalism and he is becoming more confident around the group and he is doing what is expected of an AFL footballer."

Matt Taberner (PT) – 25 disposals (16 kicks, 9 handballs) 3 goals

As in previous weeks Matt demonstrated excellent efforts and really hurt his direct opponents through high work rate. He constantly provided a target through his hard run and repeatedly hit up at the ball carrier.
Overall he took 12 marks, three of those being contested and really showed a great demand on the ball at every opportunity. He ended up kicking three goals and four points, with continuous work on his goal kicking routine the goals number will increase.

Josh Simpson (EF) 18 disposals (10 kicks, 8 handballs)

Josh played in a variety of roles throughout the game where he played as a high forward and also a deep at times. He worked very hard with his off ball running on transition to help out the defence and at one stage he went into the midfield. He had a good fourth quarter where he looked to use his legs and set up attacks where he went briefly onto the half back line. We were pleased that during the second quarter he showed good pressure in the forward line and at times was creative with his use.

Alex Howson (EF) Reserves – 15 disposals (11 kicks, 4 handballs) 1 goal

Alex played forward this week, where he started the game very well collecting 10 possessions and kicking a goal in the first quarter and a half. He positioned really well for the outlets. He took a couple of good contested marks, which is what we have been working on in the previous weeks. The focus for Alex will be playing the way he did for the first quarter over the whole four quarters and build on his contested marking.

Alex Forster (PT) – 18 disposals (10 kicks, 8 handballs)

It was a step forward for Alex this week, he had 18 possessions as a running back. Generally throughout the game he played one-on-one but at times was a plus one in defence. He constantly provided as a switch option and that’s where he received the majority of his possessions. It is a real positive to see Alex get more of the ball into his hands and he showed some good defensive positioning.

Tanner Smith (PT) – 14 disposals (10 kicks, 4 handballs) 2 goals

It was an impressive display for Tanner. He juggled the key forward roles and also went into the ruck at times. He worked really well with Matt Taberner in the forward line. His first half was impressive where he displayed strong leading patterns and constantly attracted the football. He competed aggressively at ground level and responded well from a heavy hit off the ball. He finished with two goals, and overall his use was positive.

Haiden Scholithe (SF) 18 disposals, (9 kicks, 9 handballs)

Haiden started at half back and played the majority of the first half as an extra number. He played his role well and constantly released his man into congestion and dropped off and then was used when South Fremantle chained the ball out. He was also good at making sure he used the ball well and took the best option. He constantly looked to switch the football and looked for the 45’s.

Peter Faulks (PT) 8 disposals (1 kick, 7 handballs)

Peter played in defence and controlled his opponent and showed vigour when the ball was in his direct area. He demonstrated some strong spoils and had four strong tackles. We just need Peter to get back to demanding the football and getting more of the ball in his hands.

Jesse Crichton (PT)- 18 disposals (9 kicks, 9 handballs)

Jesse played half back and wing. Jesse jumped out of the blocks and had nine possessions in the first quarter and 14 at half time. He played like a Fremantle Dockers defender with some good positioning, organisation and effective attack on the ball and use. He faded in the latter part of the game but that is something that we will build on.

Viv Michie (PT) – 31 disposals (18 kicks, 13 handballs), 1 goal

It was another solid performance from Viv, where he played inside mid. A positive from his game was that he had nine clearances, three from center bounces, four from balls ups and two from throw ins. He constantly referenced his opponent post stoppage and accumulated a lot of football. Viv is playing consistently week in and week out.

Tom Sheridan (PT) – 16 disposals (7 kicks, 9 handballs)

Tom played wing and then went to Ryan Cook from South Fremantle. Ryan had collected 16 possessions in the first half and Tom kept him to nine in the second half. Tom was disciplined to play goal side and run with Ryan Cook and really limited Cook’s effectiveness. When he did get the ball, he gave it to the first option and created space for others on the offensive.
