Close to a record win

Fremantle’s greatest winning margin in its history was 112 points against Collingwood in 2005. When Ross Lyon’s men went into the half-time break 71 points up, it seemed a new mark was imminent, but a poorthird term ruined any hopes of the record being broken and left the senior coach displeased. It was, however, the club’s greatest winning margin over the Demon’s, and the equal-lowest score Melbourne has had against Freo.

McPharlin subbed

No, he wasn’t injured, just managed. When Luke McPharlin was handed the red sub’s vest in the third term, he looked a tad bemused. After all, ‘Woosh’ had already taken 10 marks and collected 17 disposals in one of the easier days he’s had in Freo’s defence. It’s unlikely he’ll be taken off at any point next week in Adelaide, a side that beat Freo three times last season, including the semi-final that McPharlin missed through injury.

Indigenous Round

Danyle Pearce saved one of his best games of the season to date for the AFL’s Indigenous Round. Pearce had 23 disposals and two big goals, which he kicked in the brilliant Indigenous Round jumper designed by Richard Walley and Roger Hayden. Freo’s other Indigenous star playing in Sunday’s match was Michael Johnson, who also had a great game with 29 touches and 10 marks. Barra’s first-half barrage

Freo put the Demons to the sword in the first half, and there was no one more prominent than David Mundy. ‘Barra’ was everywhere, collecting a remarkable 23 touches in two quarters. We won’t know until later in the year, but it’s possible the three Brownlow Medal votes were in the bag at half time.

Even spread of goal kickers

Some wondered where Freo would generate its goals without top two goal scorers Matthew Pavlich and Michael Walters. Twelve individual goal kickers on Sunday answered that question emphatically.
