Ross Lyon has responded to suggestions from friend and former colleague Paul Roos that a technique problem is to blame for Aaron Sandilands’ lack of marks up forward.

Lyon was an assistant coach under Roos in Sydney’s 2005 premiership and the pair played together at Fitzroy in the 1980s and 90s.

Roos said on Fox Footy program ‘On the Couch’ that the 211cm Sandilands did not spread his feet enough in marking contests, allowing shorter opponents the opportunity to bring the ball to ground.

Lyon said everyone was free to voice his or her opinion in an opinion business, but he also defended his champion ruckman.

“I think what we’ve got to do is cut Aaron a bit of slack,” he said.

“He’s only been back three (games) and most of the time he’s been a ruck.”

Lyon said the onus shouldn’t be placed solely on the three-time All Australian to mark the ball when he played up front.

“It’s a bit about how we kick the ball to Aaron as well, we’re learning how he likes it kicked to him and how he does it,” he said.

“We’ve all got room for improvement.”

The Fremantle senior coach acknowledged Roos’ reputation and understanding of the game, but he said sometimes you had to think for yourself.

“You can’t take on board everything everyone says, otherwise you are just chasing your tail,” he said.

“You’ve got to stand for something that you believe in.”
