It was more about leadership than sportsmanship for Danyle Pearce in Fremantle’s 90-point win over Melbourne at Patersons Stadium on Sunday.

Pearce racked up 23 disposals and kicked two goals, in a game that saw 12 individual goal kickers for Fremantle.

In the third term Pearce had a shot on goal that was impressive enough to have been nominated for goal of the year.

If it was counted as a goal.

When the ground umpire signaled for the TV replay of the goal, the speedy midfielder advised it was touched and moved on.

Pearce said he made the decision to alert his teammates it was touched so they could prepare for the next passage of play.

“You can’t get away with it now with the score review, so you just say it was touched and make sure everyone is set up and ready and move on with it,” he said.

Pearce said the fact that the team won in Indigenous round made it that little bit more special for him.

“It’s great to get the four points, it doesn’t give us any extra points being indigenous round, but it’s been a great celebration of the Indigenous culture,” he said.

The team will travel to Adelaide this week to take on the seventh placed Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday and Pearce said he was already focused on preparing for the next round.

“A win by 90 points is always a good feeling. We’ll be happy tonight and then tomorrow look forward to Adelaide.”
