WAFL Watch: Round 1 - Defenders
Find out how Freo's players fared in the recent round of WAFL action.
Garrick played on the wing for the majority of the game. He found himself in some really good positions to impact. As is a trait of Garrick’s game he ran really well to defensively cover. He ended up having four clearances and gave a lot of defensive support. Overall Garrick had a good game.
Alex Silvagni 11 disposals (10 kicks, 1 handball) 6 marks
It was Alex’s first game for some time and he’s worked hard through the pre-season in his rehab program. He came on and was opposed to Paul Johnson and Scott Lycett and did a good job. He showed strong resilience and run. Alex was hard at the contest with his physicality and aggression, and read the cues well. It was a solid performance from Alex.
Tanner Smith 1 disposal (1 kick)
Tanner suffered a hamstring injury early in the first quarter and didn’t take any further part in the game.
Clancee Pearce 9 disposals (2 kicks, 7 handballs)
Clancee played on the wing and also went in as an inside mid. Clancee continued to compete over four quarters, and covered his opponent to prevent spread from contests. He worked hard inside and registered six tackles. He will continue to build his game to what we expect in the coming weeks.
Anthony Morabito 23 disposals (18 kicks, 5 handballs) 1 goal
It was Anthony’s first full WAFL game in some time. Anthony is building as the weeks are progressing on the training track and in games. He is playing in defence on tall forwards focusing on his starting points and giving us some strong rebound. It’s great to see him out there.
Michael Wood 6 disposals (3 kicks, 3 handballs) 1 goal
Michael rotated through the wing and, after several injuries for Peel Thunder he was moved to defence when the team was restructured. He showed some good signs with his ability to roll off his opponent and impact the contest. He also showed some versatility in the fact he can play on the wing and go into defence. We were pleased when he came back with the flight at one stage in the game. Michael is 190cm tall and our job is to focus on him improving his strength throughout the season.
Thomas Vandeleur *Reserves 11 disposals (10 kicks, 1 handball) 6 marks
It was Tom’s first game for Peel Thunder and he gave a lot of run and bounce from defence and used the ball well. Tom’s now starting to get some consistency in his training and games. He will be earmarked to play on tall and smalls as a defender. He is working on his positioning, his impact to stop his opponent and being able to rebound.
