Fremantle’s squad for Sunday’s game against Essendon includes five players in line for their first game of the season.

Clancee Pearce, Zac Clarke and Melbourne recruit Colin Sylvia were named in the 25-man squad, as were youngsters Matt Taberner and Josh Simpson.

Defender Zac Dawson will return after serving his one-match suspension for tripping.

The team lost stars Chris Mayne, Michael Walters and Garrick Ibbotson to injury.

The final 22 will be named on fremantlefc.com.au at 3.00pm WST on Friday.

Pearce was near best on ground in Peel Thunder’s loss to Swan Districts last weekend, collecting 39 disposals and 10 marks.

Freo general manager of football operations Chris Bond said the 23-year-old was building up some good form.

“He’s obviously had a bit of an interrupted pre-season, but he’s really gotten to work over the past month or so and he’s now been able to play some good footy down at Peel as well,” he said.

WAFL Watch: Round 3

Clarke has played two games in the WAFL after recovering from a knee injury sustained in January.

“He’s had some continuity with his training and his playing and he’s got a few games under his belt now, so he’s certainly in the mix as well,” Bond said.

Youngsters Taberner and Simpson are also a chance to be selected in the final 22.

“They’ve been able to get good training times under their belt and good playing time with Peel,” Bond said.

“Their form has been very solid.”

Sylvia could play his first game for Fremantle after 157 appearances for Melbourne. He was also impressive at WAFL level last weekend with 23 touches and two goals.
