Danyle Pearce knows what it’s like to struggle for breath. With the help of medication he keeps his asthma under control, but come the colder months when his asthma flares up he describes his symptoms as being like “breathing through a straw”.

Danyle is supporting the Lung Institute of WA with ‘The Search’, an annual campaign to find ‘Perth’s Best Set of Lungs’.

A club community event partner in 2014, the Lung Institute of WA is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to researching better treatments and cures for chronic lung disease.

The Lung Institute will carry out lung testing in the community, to raise awareness of lung health, including conditions like asthma and cystic fibrosis (CF).

They will start the campaign with Freo’s own search for their fans best set of lungs at the Essendon match this Sunday 13 April at Patersons Stadium.

The Lung Institute of WA will have testing stations at gate 8 from 12.30pm until 2.40pm. The five fans who return the best results will go on ground at half time to compete in the ‘Freo’s Best Set of Lungs Search.’

The winner will walk away with a Malvern Star mountain bike and bragging rights as the Freo fan with the best set of lungs.

Danyle joins the one in four Australians who live with a chronic lung disease. As well as knowing more than most people about the crippling disability it can bring – his young cousin Ashtyn lives with cystic fibrosis.

“I know what it’s like to struggle for breath, but thanks to medical research like what goes on at the Lung Institute of WA, my asthma is under control with the right medication,” Danyle said.

“My asthma doesn’t stop me doing what I love, being active or playing with my family.

“I can even live my dream of playing in the AFL and I want Ashtyn to be able to live his dreams.

“When CF was first discovered, most babies died before they turned one.

“But medical research over the years, including studies by the Lung Institute of WA, have meant that people with CF are living longer than ever, but their lives can still be disrupted by sickness.

“More work needs to be done to make sure everyone with a chronic lung disease can take a deep breath and live their dreams, and that’s why I’m supporting the Search for Perth’s Best Set of Lungs.”
