The forward has become one of the game’s straightest set-shots over the past two seasons, but he was off target at Etihad Stadium, registering two behinds from gettable attempts.
Mayne has already been busy having shots at goal at training this past week and was confident he’d straighten things up before Saturday night’s Starlight Purple Haze Game proudly supported by Fremantle Ports against Gold Coast at Patersons Stadium.
A major part of his routine has been recreating the circumstances of his set-shots from round 1.
“The amount of work that I was doing off the ball against Collingwood, when I did get my opportunity to have a shot at goal, I just wasn’t able to settle myself,” he said.
“During the past week and for the rest of this week, I’ll be putting myself under fatigue at training and then practice some set-shots in those moments, that’s the only way I can get better.”
Mayne on target after compromised pre-season
As for the emerging Suns, winners in round 1 over 2013 top eight side Richmond, Mayne said no Fremantle player needed to be told not to underestimate them.
“We already know that they’re not going to be an easy opposition, as there is no easy games in the AFL,” he said.
“We’ve got to get ourselves right, learn and improve from our last game and get out there on Saturday and get to work for Starlight and our fans.”
