FREMANTLE took a 'significant step backwards' last week and need to improve very quickly, according to coach Ross Lyon.

The Dockers face a high-flying Essendon side in a blockbuster clash on Sunday afternoon at Patersons Stadium on the back of a bitterly disappointing 58-point loss to reigning premiers Hawthorn last Friday.

Lyon says there has been a strong review of the Hawthorn loss at Fremantle this week and his side has the chance to bounce back quickly.

"We see it as a real opportunity to improve our football again," Lyon said.

"We took a significant step backwards last week. We didn't enjoy it.

"Certainly we haven't beaten each other up this week. But it's been a sharp review pointing out that we need to bring better effort and we need to work together better and play some positive football."

The Dockers have not beaten the Bombers under Ross Lyon in the past two years. Twice the Dockers led Essendon at three-quarter time at Patersons Stadium and twice the Bombers ran them down.

Lyon believes Mark Thompson's men are arguably the form team in the competition.

"At the end of the day they probably should have got across the line against Hawthorn," Lyon said.

"They should be 3-0. They're pretty much fully fit. They've beaten us the last couple of times. They've beaten us here. We've come off a really bad loss so all the pointers are that it is going to be a big challenge but one we're pretty keen to accept."

The Dockers' depth will be severely tested this week due to a mounting injury toll. Nat Fyfe has another week to serve on his suspension. Michael Barlow is still a month away from returning from a knee injury.

Chris Mayne has been ruled out of Sunday's clash due to an ankle problem, on the back of Garrick Ibbotson (dislocated shoulder) and Michael Walters (ankle) being ruled out for extended periods earlier this week.

Colin Sylvia is in line to make his Fremantle debut after being named in the extended 25-man squad alongside youngster Josh Simpson who has been in terrific touch in the WAFL.
