Senior coach Justin Longmuir says Fremantle will take their time with Cam McCarthy after the forward required medical attention at training earlier on Wednesday.
With the 25-year-old recovering in hospital, Longmuir said it was too early to decide whether McCarthy would join his teammates when they fly out to the Gold Coast on Tuesday.
“Our doctor’s recommendation was that Cam go to hospital and get checked out,” Longmuir said.
“We got the ambulance on the scene. He walked to the ambulance, got in and he was taken to hospital.
“At the moment our mind is on Cam’s health and well-being. We’ll work out what that means for the hub and what that looks like after we get the medical recommendations.
“We hope to get those recommendations and results - maybe in the next day or so, I’m not sure. We’ll work out the rest from there.”
Longmuir said McCarthy did not have any pre-existing condition.
“I spoke to Cam this morning (before training) and he seemed in good spirits,” Longmuir said.
“There can be a lot of things that lead to this. He’ll get checked over and we’ll hear more shortly.
“My understanding is that this is the first time something like this has happened to Cam.”
Longmuir urged the media not to rush and make comment on the forward’s playing future, with McCarthy in the final year of his contract at Fremantle.
“He’s in the same boat as a lot of players in the AFL and players on our list,” Longmuir said.
“Let’s wait until we work out what caused it and we’ll work out the rest from there.
“Let’s not rush off and make decisions on his future, let’s make sure he’s right now and all that will take of itself.”
