Lee Spurr wants to get off to a fast start in 2015 after what he feels was a below par beginning to his 2014.

The Fremantle defender enjoyed a strong 2013 and was elevated onto the leadership group this year.

Speaking at the club’s annual Player/Sponsor golf day at Joondalup Resort on Tuesday, Spurr said he didn’t feel his opening to the home and away season was as good as it could have been.

“Personally, I felt I had a bit of a slow start to 2014, so I’m looking to have a really big pre-season and come out and start really strongly in 2015,” he said.

Spurr couldn’t pinpoint any particular reason why he began 2014 slowly in his eyes.

“I need to sit down with my line coaches and figure out what it was,” he said.

“It was a combination of factors.”

Despite his self-assessed slow start, Spurr was among Freo’s strongest performers in the finals, particularly the Qualifying Final against Sydney.

He said it was not a case of picking up where he had left off.

“Where I left off, we’d lost to Port,” Spurr said.

“As a team, we weren’t good enough.

“You think, as a team, we want to grow. We want to improve from last year.”

The 27-year-old is also keen to continue improving hisleadership skills.

“I’ve been in the leadership group for one year and I want to improve those qualities and learn from players such as Matthew PavlichAaron Sandilands and Luke McPharlin who have been leaders of the club for a long time,” he said.
