Sheridan hopes for MCG return
If Tom Sheridan plays at the ‘G this Sunday, there’ll be a small coincidence taking place for the former Essendon Keilor boy
He was a member of the EKC senior boys team that won a state championship at the MCG in 2010 and finished runner-up at the same venue in 2011.
The third Fremantle Docker on the club’s current list to hail from EKC, after Ryan Crowley and Peter Faulks, Sheridan hopes to be selected for this Sunday’s match against Richmond at the ‘G.
If he does make the trip east for his first game at the home of football as an AFL player, there’ll be a small coincidence that takes place.
EKC will play a grand final against Hallam College as the curtain raiser to the Freo-Richmond clash.
“I found out from my old coach at EKC that the boys will be playing before our game,” Sheridan said.
The 19-year-old said his first experience on the MCG during his school days was ‘amazing’.
“I was in awe the first time I was on the ground, I couldn’t stop looking around,” he said.
“It’d be a great experience to be selected this week and play there as an AFL player, but also to play in front of the Tiger faithful, which is a huge and passionate supporter base.
“That will be a great test for the team.”
Sheridan made his AFL debut in round 23 against Melbourne last season, entering the game as the sub.
He has played in the club’s past three games this season, including two from start to finish.
“That’s been huge, a full game gives you a chance to experience AFL intensity for four quarters,” he said.
“It’s always important to play your role, but as the sub, it’s hard to get into the game, and when you do come on, you’re expected to make an impact.”
Sheridan has mainly played on a wing this season, but he said he was well capable of performing whatever role the team needed him to do.
“I can also go half-back and half-forward, I know the structures in each position, so I’m confident playing wherever I’m required,” he said.
A teammate who has helped him learn the midfield ropes has been Tendai Mzungu.
“It’s been great learning from Tendai,” Sheridan said.
If picked, Sheridan could be employing his skills at the MCG this Sunday against Richmond.
Don’t be surprised if he has a quick glance at the curtain raiser scoreboard as he runs out onto the hallowed turf.
