Fremantle are preparing for any scenario as they await clarity by the end of the month on how the AFL season may play out, according to general manager of football Peter Bell.

Bell said the AFL, the 18 clubs and the AFL Players Association were working on a number of scenarios that could see the remaining 144 games played without endangering the community amid the Covid-19 crisis.

“I know that (the AFL) are very much guided by the health experts as they should be,” Bell told ABC Radio.

“They’re very keen to avoid us coming back and playing games when it’s not the right thing for the community.

“Player health and safety is really important but the community’s health and safety is even more important.

“I know the AFL are looking at a number of different formats, they’ve told us they need a bit more time until perhaps the end of this month to arrive on a couple of different formats. Then they’ll let us know what it is and we can start planning.

“At any point in the road, things can take a dramatic turn in either direction. It goes back to rolling with the punches as best we can and adapting as we see fit.”

Bell anticipates games to be played with a compressed schedule when the season resumes and said Fremantle would request to play multiple games per interstate trip should that occur.

“Clearly the traveling is a significant component for Fremantle, West Coast, Brisbane and Gold Coast in particular,” Bell said.

“For that reason, and I think all interstate clubs will be in agreement here…I think it will be easier to compress games if you were going on a road swing for example.

“What we want to try and avoid as much as possible, is going back and forth, because that’s what makes it really difficult.”

Bell said there was a big focus on football education around the team’s game plan during the break, on top of the players’ required training.

‘The guys are keeping very connected and there is a lot of game plan education that’s ongoing,” Bell said.

“It’s one of the things you can actually do, you can jump online and really educate yourself on what the expectations are. We’re doing the best we can.”
