Captain Nat Fyfe and senior coach Justin Longmuir both believe Fremantle may have unearthed a new threat on the wing, with Cam McCarthy showing his capabilities as a running midfielder in Freo’s one-point win against West Coast in the Marsh Community Series at HBF Arena.

The forward’s switch to the new role has been the talk of Freo’s pre-season, and fans finally had the chance to see what the 24-year-old could do on Saturday.

McCarthy led Freo with eight disposals in the opening term and finished with 17 disposals, four marks and four tackles.

Fyfe said McCarthy’s skills and football smarts gave him huge potential on the outside.

“What Cam has is an elite leg and he sees stuff that other people don’t,” Fyfe said.

If we can get him running the right patterns and really access that weapon on his right foot, then he’s going to be a threat for us

Longmuir said McCarthy had great moments in his first full hitout in the role.

“I thought Cam was really good, he’s trained there all pre-season and we didn’t give him much of a run there last week and in our last intra club as we had to play him as a taller forward,” Longmuir said.

“He probably hasn’t had the game time over the last couple of weeks to get himself ready for today but I thought his first and second quarters were really good.”

Longmuir praised McCarthy for bouncing back after struggling in the third term.

“I thought he dropped away a little bit in the third quarter and it wasn’t based on his positioning or his work rate but more of not doing the basics quite well enough,” Longmuir said.

“But I thought he rebounded really well in the fourth quarter and he was a real contributor for us. That shows he has a lot of guts and ability to get back on task.

“For him to turn his game around and be a contributor in the last quarter, I was really happy with him.”
