Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir has hinted at a refreshed role for forward Cam McCarthy in 2020, with his running capabilities providing an opportunity for a spot on the wing.

Longmuir said he had been impressed by McCarthy’s pre-season return and his approach to training.

“We’re really keen to give him a fresh role and a fresh task and so far so good,” Longmuir said.

“He’s really approached the start of pre-season really well; he’s come back in good nick and we’ll give him a new challenge with a wing role this year.

“He’s clearly a good runner, a good size and a really good kick, so he’s got some really good traits to execute the wing role.”

Longmuir has also been excited by Freo’s current crop of draftees on the training track, which include top ten picks Hayden Young, Caleb Serong and Liam Henry.

“Anything is possible for all of our draftees and at the moment they are really fresh into pre-season,” Longmuir said.

“They’ve all got terrific characters and they are really respectful of the opportunity the club has given them.

“We are grateful for what them and their families are going to do for our footy club in the future.”

However, Longmuir acknowledges there is still plenty of work to be done to get his new players AFL ready.

“When you look at the vision of the under 18’s and you see them against their own peers they look like good sizes,” Longmuir said.

“But when they come and put a tank top on and join our training against some mature AFL bodies, they do look a bit slighter built.

“They’ve got a lot of work to do in the gym, they’ve got a lot of work to do in understanding our game plan.

“But we’ve seen kids have an impact at AFL clubs early in their career and I wouldn’t put any limits on our players.
