A little over two months into the role, Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir said he is relishing the opportunity to guide his players towards the 2020 season.
Speaking ahead of Monday morning’s training session, Longmuir believes having the right mix of people around him is helping to move Freo in the right direction.
“I’m really enjoying it…there has been a lot of firsts for me as well for me as a coach,” Longmuir said.
“With firsts, brings a little bit of anxiety and I’ve had to work my way through that, and I feel like I’ve come out a better coach for it.
“I’m early in my tenure here, and I’m getting to build relationships with all our players.
“With the appointment of Simon Garlick, and Peter Bell who was already here, we’ve really aligned as a footy club.
“I’m really looking forward to working with everyone on a common purpose going forward.”
Whilst skill development is a feature at training, Longmuir said it was more than a simple carbon copy of a program from a previous club.
“The program we have implemented is not a program based on what happened at a footy club prior,” Longmuir said.
“It’s based on my thoughts and philosophies on how to develop our players holistically.
“The two clubs that I worked at previously did a lot of work on skill development but it’s not just about kicking the footy a lot at training.
“It’s about setting up drills so that we are really specific with the kicks we are after and making sure that every kick you have at training can transfer to you being a better kick on game day.
“I think our players have adapted really well to that mantra.”
