Fremantle doesn't always have to have a player in the tagging role, according to senior coach Ross Lyon.

In the absence of Ryan CrowleyClancee Pearce has been used as the team's main shutdown player.

But Lyon doesn't think a tagger is always needed, although Pearce may be used in stages to quell the influence of Geelong's star-studded midfield.

Significant talents in the mix to replace Motlop

"He's (Pearce) a good chance to (tag someone)," Lyon said.

"But what we learnt last week was that Clancee was getting nutted in the last quarter and Boak had 10 (disposals).

"But at the end of the day our team and our team pressure handled that.

"So it's a good lesson for me as well, that we don't have to always have to play a tagger all the time and right throughout the game.

"We'll adjust and make our final decision down there."

Freo takes on Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Sunday 12 April.
