Garrick Ibbotson is relishing the challenge of playing as a tall defender after having to step up to cover Fremantle’s depleted backline.
With Michael Johnson, Alex Silvagni and Zac Dawson all out injured, Ibbotson has been called on to play on the opposition second or third tall this season and is matching it with the giants despite his 187cm frame.
He has lined up on tall timber such as Richmond’s Tyrone Vickery and Gold Coast’s Tom Lynch in Saturday’s win.
“I played on a 200cm guy on the weekend and then play on some smaller guys,” he said.
Ibbotson not looking too far forward
“I don’t mind it, it’s tough but it’s a challenge I am certainly enjoying.”
Ibbotson has played all 11 games this season, just one short of his total tally of games for 2014, after injuries took their toll.
“It’s good to get a few games in a row,” he said.
“To play 11 games straight and be in good health, touch wood, has been good.”
Ibbotson said having the experienced defensive pairing of Luke McPharlin and Michael Johnson alongside him was invaluable.
“Having Luke and Johnno around is really helpful,” he said.
“It’s an opportunity I’ve been able to take and I like it.”
Ibbotson said his body was holding up well but he was looking forward to a few days off this week.
