Practicing goal kicking while fatigued during the pre-season has paid off for Fremantle after David Mundy’s final minute heroics against Richmond on Saturday.
During January and February, players took set shots from 40m out following grueling training sessions, under the watchful eye of senior coach Ross Lyon.
That simulation was replicated on Saturday with Mundy’s match winning goal coming after two hours of intense football.
During the pre-season, if too many players missed the set shot the whole group would be penalised with two laps of Fremantle Oval or a set of ‘burpees’.
Senior coach Ross Lyon said earlier this year that match simulation had been an important focus during training.
Fremantle has triumphed in a number of close games this season such as Saturday’s win and a seven-point win over the Gold Coast in Round 11.
