Fremantle take on Melbourne at the MCG, the home of football, this Sunday.
It is one of just two games the club plays at the historic ground during the regular season.
We take a look back at the club’s most memorable moments at the ‘G’.
Inaugural AFL game: Round 1, 1995 v Richmond
Fittingly, Freo’s first match in the AFL was held at the home of football. Captain Ben Allan led Freo out in the historic game, with the Tigers eventual winners by just five points. The game was also the debut of club legend Peter Bell, who would eventually captain Freo from 2002 to 2006.
Tony Modra’s record 10-goal haul: Round 10 v Melbourne, 1999
Freo broke its MCG duck in a dominant 54-point win over Melbourne in Round 10, 1999. Lively forward Tony Modra’s double-figure haul still stands at the most number of goals scored in a single game by a Fremantle player.
Elimination Final 2012 v Geelong
Freo were rank underdogs going into the cut-throat final against powerhouse Geelong. The Cats were a daunting task, they were reigning premiers and had won nine out their past 12 finals. No one could have predicted Freo’s blistering start, kicking the first seven goals of the game. Matthew Pavlich led from the front booting six goals in the remarkable 16-point win.
2013 Grand Final V Hawthorn
It was the first time Fremantle had made it to the last day in September and the side fell just 15 points short of winning its first premiership against Hawthorn. While it was a disappointing result on the day for players, staff and supporters, it will go down as a milestone in the club’s history. David Mundy (28 touches) and Nat Fyfe (28) touches were among the best on ground in front of a crowd of more than 100,000 on footy’s biggest stage.
