Long time Fremantle member Janet Beilby has a strong connection to the Anzac story through her uncle, who landed at Gallipoli as a teenager.
Sgt Arthur Coolahan, South Fremantle local, not only landed at the infamous Turkish battleground but also then served in the bloody Battle of the Somme in France.
Coolahan was part of the 28th battalion infantry before his death in France in November 1917.
He died from pneumonia, after he was exposed to gas on the battlefield.
Tragically, Dr Beilby’s father was born while his brother was serving and he never met him.
“Anzac Day is very important to our family,” he said.
“We go to the Len Hall Tribute Match each year.
“We go early to make sure we watch all the ceremonies, it’s very moving.”
