Conor Glass has been upgraded to Hawthorn’s senior list and is set to make his debut for the club against Fremantle at Domain Stadium on Saturday night.
In doing so, he will become the first player recruited from Ireland to play for the Hawks.
Originally from Maghera in Northern Ireland, the 19-year-old was a decorated junior Gaelic footballer and was on Hawthorn’s radar for two years before joining the club full-time midway through 2016.
He stands 189cm and is considered a great mark and has played across half-back for Box Hill all season under the watchful of eye of coach Chris Newman.
He has impressed the Hawks with how quickly he has picked up many of the nuances of the game.
Glass had 19 disposals against North Ballarat last Saturday.
His parents have been visiting from Ireland for the the last four weeks and were about to return home when the club suggested they should consider detouring via Western Australia.
Glass will become the 21st player recruited from Ireland to play in the AFL.
The Hawks are 13th on the ladder with only a faint chance of playing finals football in 2017, but the selection of Glass is another indication of coach Alastair Clarkson’s commitment to playing young players this year.
