Sean Darcy may tower over the average AFL footballer, but he hopes he isn’t done yet.
The ruck prospect joined Fremantle with pick 38 at Friday’s NAB National Draft, and is spending the next month staying with fellow ruckman Aaron Sandilands as he settles into life in WA.
With a swimming background, reaching state junior level between the ages of six and 16, Darcy isn’t underestimating what lies ahead of him as he prepares for life in the AFL.
“I’m just looking forward to pre-season, just trying to train as much as possible,” Darcy said.
“I want to get my aerobic capacity up a bit and that’s what I’m looking for at the moment.”
At 110kg, Darcy’s tap abilities are as impressive as his size – winning 71 per cent of ruck contests in the TAC Cup with an elite 32 per cent to advantage.
His performances for the Geelong Falcons in the TAC Cup and Vic Country in the U18 Championships earned some favourable comparisons to some AFL-level ruckmen, including Shane Mumford, but Darcy is purely focused on working hard and making a name for himself.
“It’s really flattering, but I’m Sean, I’m Sean Darcy not Shane Mumford,” Darcy said.
“I look at everyone really, they’re all playing league footy. I’m not near that yet so I’ll try and take a little bit of everyone into my game.”
While Darcy’s draft height stands at 202cm, he feels he might have a few more in him.
“Yeah I hope so, I grew a few centimetres this year, and hopefully I’m still growing.”
