Freo’s Family Fun Day was held prior to the win over Geelong on Saturday, and while the action on the field was memorable, the stars of the day were the kids of Coolbinia Bombers Starkick All Abilities Team.
Starkick offers children with special needs the opportunity to play football, and the mission of the program is simple, according to Starkick’s Rob Geersen.
“Starkick is all about inclusion through football and providing opportunities for special needs children that so many of us take for granted,” Geersen said.“Our goal is that one day every child, no matter their needs and no matter where they live, will have the opportunity to play the greatest game in the world.”
If the Family Fun Day wasn’t enough excitement, the kids formed a guard of honour as Freo ran out onto the field, in an experience they would never forget, according to Geersen.
“For many of these children, just going to a live game of football was a thrill,” he said.
“To line up and cheer these players as they ran onto the ground is an experience that will stay with them for life.
“One boy in a our Starkick team received a high five from Nat Fyfe as he ran past, and I thought he was going to explode with excitement, it was a special moment to witness”
Starkick is integrated into clubs with existing an NAB AFL Auskick program, and Geerson said it has a simple motto for anyone who wants to play the game.
“If you want to play, we will find a way.”
