The Freo Dockers Schoolgirls Cup competition came to an exciting close on Sunday at Domain Stadium with two of the powerhouses in schoolgirl football, Kolbe Catholic College and St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School, squaring off against each other in the Moore Division Grand Final.
Played as the curtain raiser to the match between Fremantle and West Coast, the grand final was played at a frantic pace with a high level of skill that thrilled the large crowd. In what proved to be a terrific promotion for schoolgirls’ football, Kolbe held on over a fast finishing St Mary’s to claim back-to-back Moore division titles by five points.
Wade Spilcker, national women’s league, academies and community manager with the Fremantle Football Club and WAFC female talent manager and competition patron Alison Moore were on hand to present the Freo Dockers Schoolgirls Cup and medallions to the players, coaches and umpires.
A traditional part of the Freo Dockers Cup Grand Final is to present the best player from each school in the grand final with the match football as decided by their coaching staff.
Kate Bartlett (Kolbe) and Kelly Duckworth (St Mary’s) were presented with the match balls post game as recognition for being their schools' best player in the grand final, whilst Ariana Hetherington (Kolbe) and Jasmin Stewart (St Mary’s) were presented with a Fremantle jumper for being their schools' most consistent player during the 2016 competition.
WAFC manager of school and junior competitions Darren Davis said “The West Australian Football Commission is fortunate to have a wonderful program partner in the Fremantle Football Club and we thank them for their continued strong support of WA football. The WAFC works closely with the school community in designing and implementing quality football education and participation programs, and on behalf of the WAFC, can I take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers and staff who play a role in the delivery of school football. Your time, effort and passion are greatly appreciated.”
