NAB AFL Women’s Rising Star round three nominee Ashley Sharp is taking a lot out of the inaugural AFLW season, and hopes the excitement around the club’s move to a new training base can create a spark that will turn Fremantle’s season around. 

With just a draw to take from the opening three rounds, Freo face ladder leaders Adelaide on Sunday in a must win game at Fremantle Oval.

After returning from Sydney, where Fremantle drew with GWS in a thriller, the women’s side moved into the club’s new training base at Cockburn Central.

At Cockburn, the women’s side has a place to call their own, with personalised lockers and amenities.

There’s even an equivalent change room for an away side if Victor George Kailis Oval hosts AFLW matches in future seasons. 

“It’s fantastic, I almost got lost on my first day here,” Sharp said.

“We got to see our change rooms for the first time, which has our own names on the lockers. It’s just an honour to be able to train here and, hopefully, we can play here sometime soon.

“It’s massive as well, there are so many new and different things to take in here, and I can’t wait to train again on Wednesday.”

Sharp said that her side won’t be taking the unbeaten Crows lightly, but says the main aim is to continually improve in their hunt for a maiden victory.

“We’ll have a meeting on Friday and take bit of a look at Adelaide,” Sharp said.

“But we’re focusing on us more than anything this week, and we hope to play well as a team.

“We’ll be focusing on our basic skills and ball movement, we haven’t been elite in that area yet so we hope this week we’ll be a lot better and can get the win.

“Hopefully, we get the same support as we did last time too and everyone comes along, it’s going to be a great game.”
