Even when signing a landmark Perth Stadium user agreement on a historic day for the AFL, WA Premier Mark McGowan couldn’t help but show his true colours at Sunday’s media conference.

It’s not the first time McGowan has demonstrated his allegiance to Fremantle, taking part in the #PurpleFriday campaign by wearing purple to work during the 2014 finals series.

When asked who he hoped to open the stadium in round one, McGowan put forward a compelling case.

“Obviously, I’d like to see Fremantle (open the stadium),” the Premier said said.

“If Fremantle can play Collingwood while bringing thousands of tourists to Western Australia, that would be a good thing.”

With the signing of the agreement, Fremantle will begin its member transition process to the new venue on Monday, with the launch of Virtual Perth Stadium, an online portal.

“We’re very proud to be able to announce that we’ve made an agreement with the football clubs to come and play at the new Perth Stadium next year,” McGowan said.

“The user agreement has been signed so that means the Dockers have 50,000 memberships available to sell, and I’m sure they’ll start selling those memberships very shortly.

“I’m very pleased to say the agreements are now struck and the outcome is good both for football, for the taxpayers, for the people of the state. We’re very satisfied that we’ve reached the right outcome.”

The Premier said he was especially excited to see one particular homegrown talent shine in Perth’s world-class venue.

“We think everyone’s a winner here,” McGowan said.

“And we look forward to seeing Nat Fyfe take a screamer in the goal square next year here at the new Perth Stadium.”
