Sydney Swans coach John Longmire confirmed on Monday afternoon that forward Kurt Tippett and midfielder Tom Mitchell will both be unavailable for Saturday evening's preliminary final against Fremantle at Perth's Patersons Stadium.

Longmire said that Mitchell will require an operation on his injured ankle and will be out for the remainder of the season, while Tippett has strained a ligament at the top of his fibula and could be in contention for a Grand Final appearance should the team progress.

“He’s strained a ligament at the top of his fibula, so that means he won’t play this week as well," Longmire said on sydneyswans.com.au.

“He felt it a little bit on Thursday but then ran on Friday and ran fine on Friday, so we expected him to be fine going into the game.

“Obviously it didn’t last long and a player fell across his leg in the first five minutes, which was probably the worst case scenario for him."
