- AFLW Rookie talent search nominations open
- Fry joins Fremantle
- Houghton enjoys work with 'exciting group'
Two Fremantle-listed AFLW players have taken out the top two places in the WAWFL Dhara Kerr Fairest and Best count, held on Monday night at the Hyatt Regency, Perth.
Subiaco’s Hayley Miller finished the count on 24 votes, one ahead of runner-up Gemma Houghton of Swan Districts.
Miller’s achievement is even more impressive considering she sat out the opening four games of the season.
In an exciting finish that went down to the last round of the season, Miller was able to claim the winning vote in the final game to secure her final tally of 24 votes.
Miller’s win comes after finishing runner-up in the award in 2017.
“It’s pretty surreal. I wasn’t expecting to win at the start of the night,” Miller said.
“I don’t think it’s completely sunk in yet but I’m just really grateful for everyone who’s helped me to get me to where I am now.
“It’s an individual award but there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to get there.”
Fremantle’s Gabby O’Sullivan came in tied for eighth with 12 votes after playing just eight of East Fremantle’s 16 games in the regular season.
Miller and O’Sullivan are set to go head to head in the WAWFL Grand Final this Sunday at Claremont Oval.
East Fremantle finished the regular season as minor premiers with 15 wins from 16 games while Subiaco finished fourth with eight wins.
Miller said that Subiaco can take confidence from their recent form and pushing East Fremantle in two of their three regular season clashes.
“We’ve come a long way in the past six weeks and we’re preparing for a big final this week,” Miller said.
“We play East Fremantle and we’ve come close to beating them. I think it’s going to be a really tough game to win but I think the girls have the belief.”
The 2018 Mundella WAWFL League Grand Final will be played at Claremont Oval on Sunday with bounce down at 2.30pm, following Reserves at 12pm and Rogers Cup at 10am. Entry is $5 per person.
All games will be live streamed on the Mundella WAWFL Facebook page.
