Emily McGuire said her debut game against Melbourne in round three of the NAB AFL Women’s competition at Fremantle Oval on Sunday couldn’t have gone better.
Fremantle defeated Melbourne by five points in what was a highly contested and fought out game finishing 6.0(36) to 4.7(31).
Debutant McGuire converted Freo’s first goal in the second quarter showcasing her raw talent with a one-handed pick up and snap over her head. The forward described the moment as a “shock”.
“I was a bit shocked but couldn't get a better start really,” McGuire said.
“I didn’t actually know what happened and then everyone just jumped on me and brought me back into the moment.”
The first term saw Melbourne get ahead as Fremantle’s defensive side worked hard to keep the pressure on, limiting the visiting team to one goal and five behinds.
McGuire said the coaches message heading into the second quarter inspired the girls to fight back.
“We just needed to push up, play our game and put it back on our terms,” McGuire said.
“This is our home ground and we wanted to make sure they knew that.”
Ebony Antonio continued the terms unanswered majors with a goal booted just shy of the 50m line, as the women took control over the score board leading by one point at half time.
A tough fight back from Melbourne in the third term saw them take the lead by six points, despite early goals from Amy Lavell and Lisa Webb.
The girls continued their strong fight in the fourth quarter, keeping their composure under pressure, whilst taking control of the last term to get the win.
McGuire praised Evie Gooch for her strength and capacity to clear the defensive area and move the ball forward.
“She is just such a strong body and helps us get it out straight away,” McGuire said.
“Having Gooch’s strength down in the back line really helps us.”
Kara Donnellan and Lisa Webb also played a ferocious game finishing up with 17 disposals each.
Fremantle play the Brisbane Lions at South Pine Sports Complex on Saturday 24 February.
McGuire said she hopes the team comes out with the same fiery spirit in next week’s game.
“We want to come out strong like we did today and just fight for the ball,” McGuire said.
