Fremantle’s first year players got their first taste of AFL footy, lining up in Thursday’s AFLX competition at Hindmarsh Oval.
Stefan Giro was one of four first year players to ‘debut’ for Freo in the club’s 17-point loss to Geelong in the first AFLX game.
The 18-year-old said the experience to play AFLX was ‘intense’.
“I really enjoyed it, it was great fun to get out there with the boys and gel as a team,” Giro said.
“It was hard work, AFLX is a bit different but I really enjoyed it.”
Giro kicked Freo’s first ‘Zooper goal’ and was a standout in the fast-paced game.
The small forward ended the game with two goals and 13 disposals.
“I wasn’t really thinking, I was just playing on instinct,” Giro said.
“As soon as I got it I saw (Mark) Blicavs in front of me, so I tried to step around him and kicked it, it all went really quick.”
Freo fielded two different line-ups in each of their AFLX games, Giro adding there wasn’t much left in the tank after his game.
“I was happy with only playing the one game, because although it’s short quarters it’s really high intensity and you need to work hard,” Giro said.
“You don’t have much time to defend and obviously you get pretty stuffed but it was good.”
