Midfielder Andrew Brayshaw didn’t hide the disappointment he and he teammates felt following Fremantle’s three-point loss to Gold Coast on Sunday.
The 19-year-old said he was coming to terms with his first close loss at Freo when Fremantle leader Reece Conca gave the group some words of wisdom as they were walking off the ground.
“It was really deflating, it’s probably one of the first really close games that I’ve been a part of at Freo that we’ve lost,” Brayshaw said.
“It really hurt, especially as we thought that we could really win and in the fourth quarter we were up by a bit.
“We just really needed to control the footy a little bit more.
“Reece Conca, as we were walking off said ‘just remember this moment, boys. It’s going to hurt but it’s going to make us better’.
“We’re going to learn from it and come out this weekend for the Starlight Purple Haze round and hopefully make a few improvements and get the win against St Kilda.”
Brayshaw said that Fremantle struggled for a connection between their midfielders and forwards in the loss and was hopeful that would improve with time.
“Against North Melbourne, our connection between our defenders, mids and forwards was really strong,” Brayshaw said.
“We really clicked in that first round.
“There were a few moments against Gold Coast where our connection wasn’t as good.
“It’s that connection piece which is going to grow, we’ve got so many new players and we’re learning about each other and how we play.”
Fremantle's next game will be celebrated as the 17th Starlight Purple Haze game, which will be played agianst St Kilda on Sunday at Optus Stadium.
