Nat Fyfe – Season summary
Nat Fyfe was already regarded as one of the modern-day greats heading into this season, and 2019 was arguably his best season yet.
Fyfe improved on all of his key stats from 2018 to 2019 and recorded a career-high average of 29.2 disposals per game.
The season produced Fyfe’s second Brownlow Medal. With 33 votes, Fyfe eclipsed his 31 votes total in 2015 and won the count by six votes. He polled in 12 of his 20 matches and was given the maximum three votes nine times.
Fyfe was also recognised with his third All Australian jacket and he was named captain of the All Australian team.
While the dual Brownlow Medal winner is the hot favourite for the award, it is worth noting that Fyfe finished fourth in 2015, the first time he won the Brownlow.
Fyfe’s two Doig Medal wins have come in 2013 and 2014. He has finished third in the past two seasons.
Best game: Round 20 v Geelong
This could have been any number of games, and some of Fyfe’s best individual efforts came in losses to Richmond (three goals, 33 disposals), Hawthorn (24 disposals, three goals) and St Kilda (27 disposals, two goals).
But against Geelong, Fyfe helped lead an undermanned Fremantle to an incredible 34-point boilover against the eventual minor premiers.
Fyfe had a season high 23 contested possession from his 27 disposals and had a big impact up forward, taking three marks inside 50 and kicking 2.1.
Up against the highly rated midfield of Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood and Tim Kelly, Fyfe upped his contested ball game.
Fyfe’s goal-saving tackle on Kelly was one of the biggest moments of the game with Fremantle leading by a point in the third term at the time.
