Last year’s after the siren miss against Geelong did not enter David Mundy’s mind at all when he was lining up for goal in the final minute against Richmond.
All Mundy could think about was a mid-week goal kicking competition against his Freo teammates.
Mundy made no mistake from outside 50m, sending the visiting supporters into raptures as he sealed a four-point win at the MCG.
These are the best wins: Mundy
“That one (Geelong) didn’t pop into my mind before the kick, but what did was my goal kicking competition with Tendai Mzungu and Matt de Boer on Wednesday that I lost and lost convincingly,” Mundy said.
“I owed them coffees, so that one popped into my mind and if I missed it, I would never hear the end of it, so it was nice to put it through.”
The star Freo midfielder was yet again outstanding, having 28 possessions against the Tigers.
Mundy’s winning shot was moments after Tommy Sheridan missed his opportunity to give Freo the lead and came after great work from Garrick Ibbotson to find him just outside the arc.
“Garrick, the best roll-off defender in the AFL did his job and did it well and I just happened to find myself free by defending; it’s funny how those things work out sometimes,” he said.

“I knew there wasn’t long because I came on when Tommy was having his shot and the call was ‘if he kicks it, get numbers behind the ball’.
“The emotions run high post-game and all the boys were getting around me which was really nice.
“To get a win interstate against a team like Richmond was fantastic, but you move on pretty quick.
“We’ve got GWS next week and it will be another great challenge.”
