Two former Fremantle players will line up in the 21^st annual EJ Whitten Legends Game at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

The showcase match – introduced to raise money for prostate cancer research and awareness – features past players, competition winners and media personalities, who represent either Victoria or the Allies, depending on their state of origin.

Ex-Fremantle players Luke McPharlin and Paul Duffied will represent the Allies.

McPharlin retired at the end of last year after 256 AFL games, including 244 for Fremantle.

The 2012 All-Australian made his name as an athletic key defender and marshalled Fremantle’s backline for close to a decade.

Now 34, McPharlin was also capable in the air, claiming the 2005 Mark of the Year award for his massive grab over a pack of players including teammates Scott Thornton and Matthew Carr, and Eagles pair Adam Hunter and Andrew Embley.

Duffield – who is these days farming in Darkan - also retired last year after 171 games for Freo.

The 31-year-old made his niche as a reliable defender and became renowned for his penetrating kicking.

The charity game was introduced following the passing of legendary footballer and media personality EJ “Ted” Whitten, who died of prostate cancer in 1995, aged 62.

Alongside raising funds and awareness for the illness, the match also reflects Whitten’s passion for state of origin football.

The EJ Whitten Legend’s Game will be broadcast live on Seven Mate from 5:30pm, WST.
