- New recruit ready for a change of pace
This time three years ago, Luke Ryan was an apprentice carpenter facing what he believed to be his last chance to realise his AFL dream.
With pick no.66 in the 2016 AFL National Draft, Fremantle made Ryan’s dream a reality – selecting the mature aged defender from the Coburg Lions.
Ryan’s life has changed significantly since he was recruited at the age of 20.
After an impressive start to his AFL career, he has agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension.
On top of the year remaining on his existing contract, the deal will see him at Fremantle until at least the end of the 2023 season.
“It’s come pretty quick. They do say your career goes by quickly and it has, I’m starting my fourth year now and I’m signed on for another three,” Ryan said.
“It’s exciting times and from where I’ve come from, I’m very proud and I also want to make my family proud.”
Ryan said he was motivated to re-sign with Fremantle to repay the faith that was shown in him.
“My life is a whole lot different now that it’s just full time footy, which is good,” Ryan said.
“I don’t have to wake up early and get the tools out. It’s pretty exciting for me and the family and we’re excited to stay here with Fremantle.
“The family likes to come over and visit on holidays so we’re pretty happy.”
Ryan was also thankful for the support he has received from the Purple Army.
“Thank you to the Fremantle fans for all of your support over the years,” Ryan said.
“I’m really excited to stay around for the next four years and I hope you can get behind us. We really need you out there and let’s rock and roll next season.”
