- Walters named with 'captain' Fyfe in All Australian team
- Senior coach selection panel finalised
- Mundy's journey continues
Nat Fyfe has delivered a number of incredible seasons throughout his career for Fremantle, but rates 2019 as his best year of football to date.
Fyfe was announced as the captain of the All Australian team on Wednesday evening, and was asked how the honour compared to his 2015 Brownlow Medal winning season.
“I think this has been my best season so far, my most consistent and working through a number of challenges,” Fyfe told SEN.
“With Lachie Neale going, there was a little more scrutiny to deal with, more attention from taggers. Not to mention that this year, from a leadership perspective compared to 2015, was a lot more challenging.
'Tail can't wag the dog' - Fyfe
“We didn’t have our best players on the park, we lost some games we should have won. We only scraped out nine wins, albeit some really high quality wins against good opposition.
“In 2015, we won nine straight to start the year and the show just ran itself. I finished off the year pretty strongly this year and I think I rank it as my best so far.”
Fyfe said he was still processing how he felt about being named All Australian captain.
“It’s an honorary position in an honorary team. It’s not like it’s been selected by the players, it’s not like we have to go out and play a team as such,” Fyfe said.
“From that perspective as a pragmatic person looking at it, I’m not sure where it sits just yet.
“But when you look at the names of previous captains, there’s no doubt in the future I’ll hold it in really high esteem.
While Fyfe won’t have the actual honour of leading the 2019 All Australian team in a game, he gave an insight into his leadership style at Fremantle.
Fyfe said it involved leaning on the strengths of the other members of the leadership group.
“It starts really with role modelling behaviour that we want from our players, building relationships and then working with our other leaders to make sure we’re all on the same page,” Fyfe said.
“We’ve got Joel Hamling and Reece Conca (in the leadership group) who are very big people persons, they’re very good at connecting with all of the playing group.
“With those two in particular, along with Alex Pearce, I try and make sure we have touch points across the whole group.
“My skillset is more an on field leadership, driving standards and accountability and I get those guys in and around me to help support the rest of the group and make sure everyone feels like we’re on the same page.”
