Senior coach Ross Lyon is seeing plenty of promise coming through from Fremantle’s young players late in the 2019 season.
Lyon had particular praise for Griffin Logue, who is settling back into a defensive role in the AFL after more than a year out of the game.
The 21-year-old impressed with one particular effort where he laid three tackles in the space of 10 seconds in the second term against Sydney, which earned praise from Fox Footy commentator Gerard Healy.
“We just want to improve our footy and as you do that, the results take care of themselves,” Lyon said.
“Get the process right, train hard, try and get availability, but within those, I thought Griffin Logue, it was a really significant game with his competing.
“It was great to see that acknowledged publicly and Gerard Healey is a really respected commentator.”
Lyon continues to be pleased with the development of young midfielders Andrew Brayshaw and Adam Cerra, while young ruckman Sean Darcy led the game with 26 hitouts.
“You can see people grow before your eyes. We saw Andrew Brayshaw (in the midfield) and I thought Cerra was really good,” Lyon said
“Sean Darcy in the conditions was strong, there’s a lot of life here, and as you add (injured players) Jesse Hogan back in and Stephen Hill, Alex Pearce, Matthew Taberner and Brennan Cox, they continue to grow. It gets exciting here.”
Lyon feels that Fremantle, like many clubs in the AFL, have the ability to win any game on their day.
“The players are really growing and fighting on as most clubs are. I really like the term ‘any given Sunday’ and that’s how it’s been set up,” Lyon said.
“We still need to improve in a number of areas, we understand that, but we’re excited to go and play the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium.
“I think the roof is shut, we could get our captain (Nat Fyfe) back, we’re pretty sure of that, so it’s exciting times still for us.
“It’s good to be alive in the season and even in the losing (games) I thought our efforts were really strong.”
