Fremantle have named a debutant for Sunday’s clash against Brisbane at Optus Stadium for Sir Doug Nicholls Round.
Bewley comes in as a replacement for injured tall forward Matt Taberner.
The running midfielder is the second Fremantle player to debut this season and sixth to play their first games for Freo.
The 24-year-old was selected from Williamstown with pick no.59 in the 2018 NAB AFL National Draft and was named in the VFL Team of the Year in 2017 and 2018.
Some impressive form in the WAFL has seen Bewley earn his selection, racking up 21 disposals, six tackles and four marks in his most recent appearance for Peel against Claremont.
Bewley found out the news in the team meeting ahead of Friday afternoon’s training session.
“Peter Bell just announced to myself and the playing group that I’ll be making my debut this weekend against the Lions,” Bewley said.
“It was definitely a proud moment for me, there’s been a lot of work that’s gone in to getting to this point.
“Even since I’ve got (to Freo), there’s been a lot of work that’s gone in as well. It’s been getting to know the boys, learning all the ins and out of the game plan and the system. It’s been a big couple of months.”
Bewley said he hopes he can navigate the step up from an impressive career in the state leagues and translate that to the AFL.
“I’m hoping (my WAFL and VFL experience) holds me in really good stead for what’s to come but I’m just really looking forward to getting out there and playing my role,” Bewley said.
“It’s just doing what I do best, running hard and being a good teammate.”
Bewley said that he was delighted to be making his debut in the Sir DougNicholls Round.
“We saw the jumper during the week. Troy Cook designed the jumper, it’s pretty impressive,” Bewley said.
“It’s definitely a privilege to pull on the Freo jumper for the first time and to be wearing the Indigenous jumper adds to the experience as well.”
Round 10 in the AFL is the first of two weeks that celebrate Sir Doug Nicholls Round. Freo will wear their purple ‘home’ Indigenous jumper designed by Troy Cook for the game, which is proudly presented by Woodside.
Bouncedown for the clash is at 3.20pm.
