Richmond has been allocated the prized No.1 pick in the 2019 NAB AFL Women's Draft as a priority selection.
The Tigers, one of four teams entering the competition next season, have been given seven priority picks after signing six players from other teams in the first phase of the AFLW Trade and Signing Period.
Richmond and the other expansion teams – Gold Coast, St Kilda and West Coast – had the opportunity to sign up to 12 players in the two-week window that finished last Thursday.
If the teams did not sign 12 players, the AFL allocated them priority picks to make up the shortfall, with all four given one extra priority pick on top of their allotments.
The four sides are only able to trade one priority selection in a round where they have been granted multiple priority picks.
St Kilda has four priority selections, Gold Coast two and West Coast just the one.
It's a similar result to last year's expansion period, which saw Geelong allocated six picks before North Melbourne had its first, a reflection of their contrasting list-building approaches.
The AFL released a statement explaining this year’s round of priority selections, saying it took into consideration:
- An assessment of the expansion signings for each team
- The players selected by each team through the 17-year-old priority selection period
- The need for existing teams to receive selections in the draft that reflect their finishing positions in 2019
Compensation picks after the Trade and Signing Period have also been announced, with Brisbane (pick 20), Fremantle (21), Greater Western Sydney (23) and Western Bulldogs (24) receiving a pick at the start of the second round.
After losing 11 players during the first Trade and Signing Period, Brisbane – through picks received in trades – has four selections in the first round before cross-town rival Gold Coast has its first selection (18).
Following a strong signing period, West Coast's first selection is pick 19.
