Fremantle midfielder David Mundy said he was pleased with the efforts of versatile forward Michael Walters in the midfield at Friday’s intraclub practice match at Victor George Kailis Oval.
Walters has been slated to step up in the midfield for the first half of this season with the likes of Connor Blakely on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.
The star Docker has split time between the forward line and midfield in recent seasons but spent most of the intraclub clash in the midfield.
Walters was rested for the final term but showed little signs of being held back by his managed training load leading into February.
“Sonny hasn’t spent a whole lot of time in the middle this summer, so it was good to get him in there,” Mundy said.
“He was pretty clean and showed his class at stages, so I think it was a good build-up from Sonny.”
Mundy said a slippery ball in the hot and sticky conditions made it difficult to have a clean contest.
“It was a challenging affair, we had all the boys cracking in,” Mundy said.
“It was quite slippery early on, so it was tough in the middle especially. I think in terms of our system, it worked out pretty well.”
Mundy said he was pleased with the showing of Freo’s new-look forward line, with the likes of Jesse Hogan, Rory Lobb and Matt Taberner lining up alongside Mundy for team ‘purple’.
“The forwards were good, again with the scrappy conditions we didn’t get too much clean ball going in there but I think we saw the benefit of having some talls up there competing with some dirty ball coming in,” Mundy said.
“The ground level guys, like Sam Switkowski and Brandon Matera, really got to work, locking it in there and applying some pressure.
“I think the fundamentals are there, it will just be good to play through that a bit more.”
Mundy said that small forward Lachie Schultz showed his potential with his efforts for team ‘white’.
The new draftee shone in the first half, kicking two goals and setting up another two.
“Lachie was really dominant from a small forward perspective for the opposition,” Mundy said
“He was getting some great front and centre work. It’s good to see guys that are new into the system really nail down their role and focus on some simple things coming into the game.”
